Types of Burns

Although burns can be fatal, many burn injuries can heal completely with time and treatment. Burn injuries are classified into three different categories:

First degree burns occur when just the first layer of skin is affected. The skin is reddened and normally heals in approximately one week or less. First degree burns can nevertheless be extremely painful.

Second degree burns affect both the first and second layers of skin. With a second degree burn, the burned skin usually appears moist and will often blister. Pain is classified as severe for second degree burns.

Third degree burns affect all layers of skin and even damage the tissue underneath the skin. Third degree burned skin is white or black and may appear dry. Third degree burns always lead to permanent scarring. Pain is classified as extreme for anyone who has suffered a third degree burn.

There are several different ways a person can be burned including:

  • Contact with fire, hot liquids, steam, etc.;
  • Contact with nuclear radiation or ultraviolet light; or
  • Contact with acid or alkali.

What if I Cannot Afford To Hire An Attorney?

Most of our clients do not have the thousands of dollars needed to retain an attorney and litigate their case. The Law Offices of Richard deSaulles regularly takes cases on a contingency basis. For cases taken on a contingency basis, this means:

  • You do not have to pay anything to hire our firm to represent you;
  • Our contingency fee is based on a reasonable percentage of the amount we obtain for you;
  • We will never settle your case without your authorization; and
  • If there is no recovery in your case, you do not owe us a fee.

For those clients who prefer to pay an hourly rate, our firm is happy to discuss such an arrangement. Either way, we will make sure that the terms of the representation are agreed upon before initiating representation.
